What is Florida Bright Futures Scholarship?

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program is a merit-based scholarship program for high school students.

With the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, students are rewarded for their academic accomplishments during high school by receiving financial aid for postsecondary education and career development.

Florida Bright Futures Scholarships are awarded by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE).

In 1997, the Florida Legislature created the Florida bright futures scholarship.

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship program offers three award levels:

  • Award for Florida Academic Scholars.
  • Medallion Scholars Award for Florida.
  • As well as the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award.
  • In order to qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars program, you must have a minimum weighted GPA of 3.5, an ACT score of 29, or a combined reading/math score of 1290 (1330 starting in 2021) and 100 hours of community service.
  • Medallion Scholars: this program requires a minimum weighted GPA of 3.0, ACT score of 26 (25 starting in 2021) or SAT combined reading/math score of 1170 (1210 starting in 2021) and 75 hours of community service.
  • Students pursuing career education or certificate programs are eligible for the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars program, which requires a minimum weighted GPA of 3.0.

After completing the corresponding associate degree, the Florida Gold Seal CAPE Scholars program funds up to 60 credit hours for a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science program.

Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Requirements 2023

Different awards have different academic eligibility criteria and provide additional award amounts and semester hours. Bright Futures awards are subject to the following general requirements. In order to qualify for one of these awards, you must:

  • You must be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Your Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) must be completed by August 31, your high school graduation year.
  • Earn a standard Florida high school diploma or equivalent from a Florida public high school or a private school registered with the Florida Department of Education
  • You must not have been convicted of a felony
  • An eligible Florida public or independent post-secondary institution must accept and enroll the applicant in a degree or certificate program.
  • Each term, students must enroll in at least six (non-remedial) credit hours.

All of these requirements must be met in order for your Florida Bright Futures award to be awarded to you.

Specific Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Requirements

Bright Future Scholarships have many conditions, including minimum GPA, ACT/SAT, and hours of service requirements.

The Florida Academic Scholars Program (FAS) is the most competitive scholarship, followed by the Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS), and finally, the Gold Seal Vocational Scholars (GSV).
