CompuServe is a commercial online service that competes with other services such as America Online, Prodigy, and The Microsoft Network You dial into CompuServe using your computer and a modem, and CompuServe charges you for the privilege. CompuServe is like an electronic small town. You wander down the virtual main street and find all sorts of shops-large and small, general and esoteric. And as you walk, you run into all sorts of interesting people to talk with. All manner of social interaction can be yours, just for the asking Want up-to-the-minute news and stock reports? A large collection of news- paper and magazine articles? A place to share your opinions on issues of the day? Some help using your computer hardware and software? A forum to share your hobbies and special interests? A collection of stores that offers a variety of quality merchandise? Well, CompuServe has all of that-and more. In short, you can find just about anything you want on CompuServe.
What is the Internet?
If CompuServe is an electronic small town, the Internet is the electronic world-with hundreds of millions of global citizens. CompuServe 3.0 pro- vides you with a direct connection to the Internet, where you can use such Internet services as e-mail, USENET newsgroups, and the World Wide Web.
The Web is iin my opinion the nearest thing you can find online. On the Web you l nd a mind boggling aray of sites covering just about every topie imaginable, all linked to one another via the use of a hot new technolon called hypertext Portunatey, Compuerv 30 includes a built-in Web browser that lets you view Web pages the same way you access CompuServe’s proprietary swes in at with CompuServe 3.0, it’s hard to tell where CompuServe ends and the Internet begins!
would you use CompuServ?
Of course, just about everything you can do with CompuServe, you can also do by walking down the main street of your town. But with CompuServe, you don’t have to lace up your shoes, put on your jacket, and do the walking All you have to do is pull a chair up to your computer and punch a few keys Nobody cares how you’re dressed or if you’ve washed your hair today. In fact, no one will even notice you’re there unless you want them to. It’s jast more convenient to do all that stuff in one place. And what place could be more convenient than your own home? No matter what you want to do, you can do it on CompuServe. Why wouldn’t you use it?
