Yahoo HotJobs launches new search algorithm

Yahoo today released a press release announcing a new search ranking algorithm for the HotJobs service. They named the new algorithm REAL, which represents relevance, engagement, availability, and location:

R– Relevance: Match the text in the position and description to the keyword used by the candidate

E– engagement: measuring the degree of candidate response to the work list

A– Availability: Make sure the displayed position is still not populated

L– Location: Show work at a location of interest to the candidate

The new ranking system is designed to be part of the overall strategic plan to “use Yahoo! technology to improve the efficiency of the recruitment process and provide recruiters with unique insights into jobseeker behavior.” In addition, REAL is able to leverage Yahoo’s behavioral targeting and search optimization. The advantage is to rank the list based on user engagement.

According to Yahoo, since the launch of REAL, “applicable to” each job list has increased by 25%, which is a key success indicator for recruiters.

Yahoo also has a newspaper partner alliance that uses HotJobs, and they will also benefit from this change. Yahoo’s newspaper alliance reached 30% of the US daily newspaper.
